Key takeaways

  • The upfront fee and the total payable on a plan are different numbers. The gap here is $240.
  • Resubmissions are unlimited and free, and a 12 month extension costs nothing. Both are common hidden charges elsewhere.
  • Smart and Skilled funding may reduce the fee substantially for eligible NSW learners.
  • Price differences between providers usually reflect support and assessment design, not quality.
  • Compare total cost against inclusions for the same qualification code, or you are not comparing anything.

What is included in the course fee?

Five things, and it is worth knowing what each one actually means rather than taking the words at face value.

InclusionWhat it means for you
Course accessAccess to the online platform for the full course period, provided within 24 hours of your enrolment being finalised
Learning resourcesAll learning material for the nine units, including the project information you work from. Nothing further to buy
Trainer guidanceA qualified trainer you can ask, with email responses within 48 hours
SmartCoach™ supportAI learning assistance available at any hour. It helps you understand the work. It does not make assessment decisions
AssessmentMarking by a qualified assessor within 5 business days, with specific feedback, and unlimited free resubmissions

That last line is the one most worth checking against other providers, because resubmission charges are where an advertised fee can quietly grow.

Upfront payment or instalments?

Four options. The table shows what you actually pay in each case.

Every option gives you the same course and the same access. The only variable is the total. Spreading payments across a year costs $240 more than paying in two, which is worth knowing rather than discovering later. Whether that is worth paying depends entirely on your cash flow, and for plenty of people it is.

Could there be additional costs?

Two charges that catch people out elsewhere do not apply here.

Resubmission. If an assessment is not yet satisfactory, your assessor tells you what to fix and you resubmit. Unlimited, no fee.

Extension. A 12 month extension is available free if you need longer than the standard course period.

What you do need to supply yourself is the equipment: a desktop or laptop computer, reliable broadband internet and standard office software for producing documents and spreadsheets. No specialist project management software is required.

For any other charge, the current Fees and Refunds Policy is the document that governs it. Read it before you pay rather than taking any webpage, including this one, as the final word.

Can funding reduce the fee?

Possibly. This qualification may be available under the NSW Smart and Skilled program for eligible learners, which can reduce the course fee significantly.

Eligibility generally requires that you are a NSW resident, an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible visa holder, aged 15 or over, and not currently enrolled in secondary education unless through an approved traineeship pathway. Funding availability and conditions are subject to change, so this needs confirming for your circumstances rather than assuming.

It is worth checking before paying a standard fee. The difference can be substantial.

Why can course prices differ between providers?

You will find the same qualification code advertised at widely different prices. The difference usually sits in things you can investigate.

  • Delivery format. Self-paced online, scheduled virtual classes and face to face all cost different amounts to run.
  • Support included. Whether you get a trainer you can actually reach, and how quickly they answer.
  • Assessment design. Practical work marked individually costs more to deliver than automated multiple choice.
  • Access duration. Six months and eighteen months are not the same product.
  • What happens when things go wrong. Free resubmissions and extensions versus charges for both.

A higher price does not prove better teaching, and a lower one does not prove worse. What it does mean is that two fees are rarely comparable until you know what each buys.

How to compare course fees properly

  1. Compare the same qualification code. BSB40920 against BSB40920, not against a short course or a Diploma.
  2. Ask for the total payable on the plan you would actually use, not the advertised figure.
  3. List the inclusions side by side. Resources, trainer access, marking turnaround, resubmissions.
  4. Check what the assessment involves. Practical work and multiple choice are different products at any price.
  5. Check the access period and what an extension costs.
  6. Ask what is not included. The answer is more revealing than the brochure.

Can an employer contribute to the cost?

Some do, some do not, and there is no entitlement either way. What tends to work is connecting the request to a specific need the business already has rather than framing it as personal development.

Before the conversation, get clear on:

  • The business problem it addresses. A project that ran over, a process nobody documented, work that keeps getting handed around.
  • What you would be able to do afterwards, in concrete terms.
  • The total cost and the payment option you are proposing.
  • The time commitment and whether any of it falls in work hours.
  • What the business gets while you study, since the practical work can be applied to real work in progress.

Ask for a decision rather than a favour. Some employers will fund all of it, some a portion, and some will offer study time instead of money, which is worth more than people expect.

What should you check before paying?

Get the current written information on fees, payment arrangements, withdrawal and refunds before you pay anything, from any provider. Those terms are set out in the provider’s own policy documents, which is where your actual rights and obligations live rather than in marketing material.

Read them. Ask about anything unclear. A provider who answers fee questions plainly before you enrol is likely to answer other questions plainly afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Certificate IV in Project Management Practice cost?

At Vanguard Business Education the standard fee is $1,970 AUD, covering course access, learning resources, trainer guidance, SmartCoach support and assessment. Payment plans are available and cost more in total, from $1,970 paid in two instalments up to $2,210 paid fortnightly. Pricing is current as at 26 October 2026.

Do payment plans cost more than paying upfront?

Yes. Two monthly payments of $985 total $1,970, the same as the standard fee. Three payments of $684 total $2,052, six of $358 total $2,148, and 26 fortnightly payments of $85 total $2,210. The longest plan costs $240 more than the shortest.

Are there extra costs beyond the course fee?

Resubmissions are unlimited and carry no fee, and a 12 month extension is available free. You supply your own computer, internet and standard office software. For anything else, check the current Fees and Refunds Policy before paying, since that document is what governs charges.

Can government funding reduce the fee?

This qualification may be available under the NSW Smart and Skilled program for eligible learners, which can reduce the fee significantly. Eligibility generally requires being a NSW resident, an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible visa holder, aged 15 or over and not enrolled in secondary school. Conditions change, so confirm rather than assume.

Why do project management course prices vary so much between providers?

Delivery format, how much trainer support is included, whether assessment is practical or multiple choice, how long you have access, and what happens if you need more time all affect price. A higher fee does not prove better teaching and a lower one does not prove worse. Compare the inclusions, not the headline.
