Key takeaways

  • BSB50320 is made up of 12 units, 7 core and 5 elective, at AQF Level 5.
  • Entry is restricted by the training package, so no provider can waive it.
  • Holding a Certificate IV does not satisfy entry unless it contains the four named units.
  • Meeting entry on work experience admits you but awards you none of the 12 units.
  • Vanguard Business Education delivers it 100% online over up to 12 months with no formal exams.

What is the BSB50320 Diploma of Human Resource Management?

The BSB50320 Diploma of Human Resource Management is an AQF Level 5 qualification from the BSB Business Services Training Package for people working across human resources roles. The national record names human resources consultant, human resources advisor and human resources business partner as the job roles it relates to, and no licensing or certification requirements apply to it.

The training package adds one point that matters in practice: HR responsibilities are determined at workplace level. In a smaller organisation, one person may cover every aspect of HR, from the job advertisement to the WHS consultation record. In a larger HR team, you may coordinate a single function such as remuneration or learning and development and never touch the rest. The qualification is written to cover both, which is why the units run across workforce planning, recruitment, performance, employee relations, risk and WHS.

How is the qualification structured?

Every provider delivering BSB50320 works to the same packaging rules: 12 units in total, made up of 7 core units and 5 electives. Two electives must come from Group A, Human Resources, and two from Group B, Transferable Skills. The fifth may come from either group, or from a relevant Certificate IV, Diploma or Advanced Diploma elsewhere.

The seven core units are fixed: BSBHRM521, BSBHRM522, BSBHRM523, BSBHRM524, BSBHRM527, BSBOPS504 and BSBWHS411. Providers differ in the five electives they select, so two qualifications with the same national code can teach noticeably different content. Compare the elective selection rather than the course description.

Who is the Diploma of Human Resource Management suitable for?

The Diploma suits people who already carry HR responsibility and want to move from coordinating HR tasks to shaping workforce strategy. Suitability and eligibility are separate questions, and this one is about the work you do rather than whether you are allowed to enrol.

HR administrators and officers are the clearest fit. If you maintain employee records, post vacancies, organise interviews and keep onboarding moving, the Diploma adds the layer above the task: how a workforce plan is built, why a remuneration approach is structured as it is, and how employee relations matters are managed rather than escalated.

Office managers, operations coordinators and business owners often absorb the people work without HR appearing in their title. If you run inductions, sit in on performance conversations and keep the employee files, the Diploma gives structure to work you learned by necessity. This group also frequently meets the experience-based entry route.

Who may be better served by a different qualification?

People new to HR with no relevant experience are better served by a Certificate IV, because the entry requirements will stop them and the content assumes a working context they do not yet have. If your responsibilities are broad leadership rather than people systems, a leadership and management qualification fits better. Senior practitioners already operating at strategic level should read the unit list closely, because much of it may already be their daily work.

What are the entry requirements for BSB50320?

Entry requires either completion of BSBHRM411, BSBHRM412, BSBHRM415 and BSBHRM417, or equivalent competencies, or two years equivalent full-time relevant work experience. These requirements sit in the training package rather than in any provider’s policy, so they apply identically wherever you study and cannot be waived. The entry requirements are set out in full if your situation is borderline.

Unit codeUnit title
BSBHRM411Administer performance development processes
BSBHRM412Support employee and industrial relations
BSBHRM415Coordinate recruitment and onboarding
BSBHRM417Support human resource functions and processes

Check them against your transcript by code. A Certificate IV in Business or Leadership and Management will not contain all four unless they were selected as electives, and even a Certificate IV in Human Resource Management varies by provider.

Under the second route, equivalent full-time means part-time experience counts on a scaled basis, so four years at half-time matches two years full-time. Relevant means the work has to connect to human resources, so two years in a role with no people responsibilities will not qualify you. Vanguard Business Education reviews your transcript or employment information before confirming an enrolment.

What if you do not meet either route yet?

The usual pathway is a Certificate IV containing the four specified units. The BSB40420 Certificate IV in Human Resource Management delivered by Vanguard Business Education includes all four, and has no training package entry requirements of its own. If you hold some of the four units already, the gap may be one or two units rather than a whole qualification, which is worth asking about rather than assuming.

What are the entry requirements for the BSB50320 Diploma of Human Resource Management?

Entry requires either completion of BSBHRM411, BSBHRM412, BSBHRM415 and BSBHRM417, or equivalent competencies, or two years equivalent full-time relevant work experience. These are training package requirements, so every provider applies them. Vanguard Business Education checks your transcript or employment evidence before confirming an enrolment.

What HR capability does the Diploma develop?

The Diploma develops capability across the full workforce lifecycle, and Vanguard Business Education organises the 12 units into four connected clusters that follow it. This clustering is a practical delivery method rather than a structure the training package prescribes.

DevelopPerformance and capability

Vanguard Business Education delivers this through Applied Capability Education, where you produce the document an HR practitioner would actually produce and the assessment evidence comes out of that work. You can read how Applied Capability Education works if you want the detail behind the approach.

How many units are in the Diploma of Human Resource Management?

The BSB50320 Diploma of Human Resource Management contains 12 units of competency: seven core units and five electives. Two electives must come from the Human Resources group and two from the Transferable Skills group. Providers choose their own electives, so the content varies between registered training organisations even under the same national code.

What does HR capability look like in practice?

HR capability shows up as the documents and decisions that make people processes repeatable, which is easiest to see through a single situation.

Illustrative scenario

A 28-person building services company wins a maintenance contract and needs five new employees in three months, with no HR team and no documented hiring process. This example is fictional.

Clarifying the roles means coordinating role requirements and building consistent position documentation. Organising recruitment means planning the campaign, setting selection activities, assigning responsibilities and keeping records. Preparing new employees means coordinating a consistent induction. Supporting development means establishing feedback and development processes for the new team. Improving HR administration means reviewing records, responsibilities and procedures so the function holds together afterwards.

Two things sit outside that work. Award interpretation, contract terms and dismissal decisions belong with an employment lawyer or the Fair Work Ombudsman. And the example shows the work, not a guaranteed result for the business or the person doing it.

What roles can the Diploma support?

The Diploma is most often used to support progression into human resources officer, coordinator and adviser roles, talent acquisition roles, people and culture adviser roles and, with enough experience, human resources business partner work. The national record names consultant, advisor and business partner as the related roles.

What the qualification contributes is capability and a credential. What it does not contribute is the experience, industry knowledge and internal track record employers weigh alongside it. Two people finishing the same Diploma can land very differently depending on what they already do, the size of their organisation and the local job market. Pay varies the same way, so check current job advertisements for the roles and regions you are targeting.

Should you choose the Certificate IV or the Diploma in human resource management?

Choose the Certificate IV if your HR work is still mostly transactional, and the Diploma if you are coordinating or shaping HR systems and can meet the entry requirements.

For many people the decision is made for them. If you cannot meet either entry route, the Certificate IV is the available option and a direct pathway into the Diploma afterwards. There is a fuller comparison of the Certificate IV and the Diploma if you want them side by side.

Should you choose the Diploma of HR or the Diploma of Leadership and Management?

Choose human resource management if you design and coordinate the people systems others use, and leadership and management if you are accountable for a team and its results. Both sit at AQF Level 5 and both deal with people, which is why they get confused.

The HR Diploma builds specialist capability in workforce planning, recruitment and remuneration, performance frameworks, employee relations and HR governance. The Diploma of Leadership and Management builds broader capability in leading teams, operational planning, communication and managing the performance of people who report to you. The overlap is real around performance conversations and development. A useful test: if colleagues come to you for advice on how to handle a people matter, HR fits. If you are accountable for a team hitting its targets, leadership fits. The full comparison of the two Diplomas goes further.

How does online study and assessment work?

Vanguard Business Education delivers BSB50320 fully online with no fixed class times and no formal exams, assessing you through practical workplace projects instead. You work through connected projects across workforce planning, recruitment, performance, learning, employee relations and WHS, and the documents you produce become the assessment evidence.

You can use activities from your own workplace where your assessor approves them, or work through a workplace simulation. The simulation matters for anyone who cannot use real employee information, which includes most people studying while employed somewhere that would not want its performance records used as coursework.

Qualified trainers provide guidance and feedback throughout. Qualified assessors review your evidence and make every assessment decision. SmartCoach provides additional learning assistance between trainer contacts and does not make assessment decisions. One practical note: some units require you to demonstrate consultation, negotiation or feedback involving other people, so plan those tasks early because they depend on someone else’s availability.

Can you study the Diploma of Human Resource Management online?

Yes. Vanguard Business Education delivers the BSB50320 Diploma of Human Resource Management fully online with no fixed class times and no formal exams. Assessment is through practical workplace projects, using activities from your own workplace where your assessor approves them or a workplace simulation where you cannot.

How long does the Diploma take and what does it cost?

Vanguard Business Education gives you up to 12 months of course access, and the course fee is $2,100 when paid as two monthly payments of $1,050.

Payment optionInstalmentsTotal payable
2 payments (best value)2 × $1,050 monthly$2,100
3 payments3 × $725 monthly$2,175
6 payments6 × $375 monthly$2,250
12-month option26 × $92.31 fortnightly$2,400.06

Course access and study commitment are different things. The 12 months is your access period, not a study plan, and how quickly you finish depends on your existing HR experience and the hours you can commit each week. The fee covers learning resources, qualified trainer support, SmartCoach and assessment. Payment conditions and refund arrangements sit in the current Fees and Refunds Policy, and there is a breakdown of what the fee covers and how long the Diploma takes. Check the BSB50320 course page for current figures before you enrol.

Can your experience or previous study count towards the qualification?

Yes, through three separate routes that get confused constantly.

  1. Meeting entry requirements decides whether you can enrol and awards you nothing.
  2. Credit transfer applies when you have already completed an identical or equivalent unit with another registered training organisation, and the unit is credited on production of the transcript.
  3. Recognition of Prior Learning applies when your skills meet a unit’s requirements but no qualification shows it, and a qualified assessor decides against the unit requirements.

Both RPL and credit transfer are available to eligible learners. Someone admitted on two years of relevant work experience still has all 12 units to complete unless they apply separately and the evidence supports it.

How do you decide whether BSB50320 is right for you?

Settle eligibility first, because nothing else matters until it is answered. Do you hold the four units, or can you evidence two years equivalent full-time relevant experience? If neither, look at the Certificate IV.

Then work through four questions. Are you aiming at designing HR systems or at leading a team? Which of the four capability clusters covers work you have never done, because if the answer is three of them the level is right and if it is none you may already be above it? Can you protect regular study hours for 12 months around your current job? And do you have workplace situations to apply this to, or will you be working through the simulation? Either works, but know which before you start.

What this qualification will not do

A Diploma will not create HR experience you have not had, and it will not persuade an employer to move you into a business partner role on its own. Employers hiring at adviser and business partner level want evidence of handling real workplace matters, and the qualification is one input into that rather than a substitute. It also cannot give you legal advice on a live employee relations matter.
