Key takeaways

  • HR job titles are not standardised, so read the duties in the advertisement rather than the heading.
  • Adviser and consultant roles sit at an occupational skill level where degree expectations are common.
  • A Diploma does not qualify you to be an HR manager, because that role carries accountability study does not substitute for.
  • Your existing experience, not the qualification, usually decides which roles are a realistic next step.
  • Assessed coursework is evidence of capability, not employment experience, and should be described as study.

Which HR roles should you investigate with a Diploma?

Start with human resources officer, human resources coordinator, people and culture coordinator and talent acquisition coordinator roles, because these are where Diploma-level qualifications are most often listed as acceptable. They are also where the gap between what you can evidence and what the employer wants is usually closeable.

Adviser and consultant roles are worth investigating with one caveat. The Australian Bureau of Statistics groups human resource advisers, recruitment consultants and workplace relations advisers together at Skill Level 1, where most occupations require a bachelor’s degree or higher and at least five years of relevant experience can substitute. That describes what is typical across the occupation rather than setting a hiring rule, but it explains the degree wording you will see in a share of adviser advertisements.

What jobs can a Diploma of Human Resource Management help you apply for?

The qualification is most often used to support applications for human resources officer, human resources coordinator, people and culture adviser, talent acquisition and human resources adviser roles. Job titles are not standardised between employers, so compare the duties listed in each advertisement rather than the title at the top.

What do HR officer and coordinator roles actually involve?

HR officer and coordinator roles involve maintaining personnel records and HR information systems, coordinating recruitment and inductions, and answering employee enquiries about pay, leave and conditions. You produce position descriptions, interview schedules, onboarding checklists and reporting out of the HR system.

Before applying, check which system the employer uses, how many employees you would support, and whether payroll sits inside the role. Those three answers change the job more than the title does.

What do adviser and business partner roles involve?

Adviser roles involve advising management on workplace relations, performance and disciplinary matters, interpreting awards, agreements and employment contracts, and handling disputes and grievances. Business partner roles add ownership of a business unit, which means workforce planning with its leaders and running complex people matters end to end.

The step up to business partner is an experience threshold more than a qualification one, because the title signals you have already handled those matters on your own judgement.

How does HR work differ between small and large organisations?

In a smaller organisation one person usually covers several HR functions at once, while in a larger HR team responsibilities are specialised and you may coordinate a single function. Both are legitimate starting points and they develop different things.

Breadth is the gain in a small organisation, and the cost is that there is rarely anyone more senior in HR to test a judgement call with. Depth and structured escalation are the gains in a larger team, and the cost is scope.

How does your current experience change your options?

Your current experience usually determines your next realistic role more than the qualification does. An HR administrator who already knows the systems is positioned for an officer or coordinator role with more ownership, and the gap is normally judgement rather than knowledge.

An office manager with years of undocumented HR duties often has greater breadth than an administrator, so the first task is making that experience legible on paper. The natural target is a generalist or standalone HR role in a small to mid-sized business.

An existing HR officer is positioned for adviser or senior officer work, where the Diploma is less about entry and more about workforce planning, remuneration and employee relations as things to shape rather than administer.

Does the Diploma qualify you to become an HR manager?

No. A Diploma contributes capability towards a management role but does not qualify you for one. The ABS classifies human resource managers at Skill Level 1, where most occupations typically require a bachelor’s degree or higher and five years of relevant experience can sometimes substitute.

The duties explain why. Setting HR strategy, bargaining over pay and conditions, running WHS and equal opportunity programmes with compliance obligations attached, and overseeing redundancy policy are accountabilities rather than tasks, and they are learned by carrying them.

Can you become an HR manager with a Diploma of Human Resource Management?

No. A Diploma does not by itself qualify you for a human resources manager role. The ABS classifies human resource managers at a skill level where most occupations require a bachelor’s degree or higher. The role also carries strategy, bargaining and compliance accountability that a qualification alone does not provide.

What should you look for in HR job advertisements?

Read five current advertisements for your target roles and separate the essential criteria from the desirable ones, because essential criteria are usually screened against and desirable criteria are frequently negotiable.

Then read the qualification wording closely. A tertiary qualification named as essential is a different signal from a relevant qualification or equivalent experience, and the second is an open door. Watch for named HR, payroll or applicant tracking systems, because a system that keeps reappearing is a specific and fixable gap. Pay varies by sector, size and location, so check what advertisements in your region are actually offering.

How do you demonstrate HR capability on an application?

Separate work you did in a job from work you produced as assessed coursework, and describe each as what it is. For employment, give the situation, what you personally did, what you produced and what happened, keeping employee information confidential.

Coursework is legitimate evidence of capability. In the BSB50320 Diploma with Vanguard Business Education you finish holding a workforce plan, a recruitment campaign plan, an onboarding framework and an employee relations action plan. Saying that you developed these as part of your Diploma is honest and still persuasive. Blurring them into employment history is the mistake, because interviewers ask follow-up questions about context and stakeholders that a study project will not survive.

Does completing a Diploma of Human Resource Management guarantee a job?

No. Completing the BSB50320 Diploma of Human Resource Management does not guarantee employment, an interview or a promotion. It can strengthen an application by giving you nationally recognised capability and practical evidence of HR work you produced, but employers also weigh experience, industry knowledge and references.

What this will not do

If your gap is years of HR experience, a Diploma will not fill it and enrolling will not make the next application land. Getting HR responsibility added to your current role, even informally, usually moves you further in twelve months than a qualification does on its own.
