What Happens If You Leave Your Job During a Traineeship?

Updated: May 2026 | 7 min read

Quick Answer

Leaving your job during a traineeship ends the training contract, but it does not erase what you have already achieved. Units you have been assessed as competent in are permanently recorded on your USI transcript and your RTO must issue a Statement of Attainment for those units. You can re-enrol later, apply for credit transfer and complete the remaining units independently. Financial implications depend on your employment and funding arrangements. Before making a decision to leave, talk to your RTO and your Apprenticeship Connect provider — a contract transfer to a new employer may be possible. Vanguard Business Education (RTO 91219) supports students through exactly these situations with SmartCoach™ available whenever you need guidance.

Jobs end for reasons that have nothing to do with your commitment to finishing a qualification. Workplaces change, employers close, circumstances shift. The fear of losing everything you have worked toward stops some people from making necessary career moves.

Understanding what actually happens when a traineeship ends early gives you the information to make a clear-headed decision rather than one driven by anxiety.

What Happens Immediately

When you leave your job, your employment ends and the training contract is suspended or cancelled. Your employer is required to notify the state training authority — in NSW, this is Skills NSW — that the contract is ending. Your RTO is also notified.

At this point, the formal traineeship arrangement ceases. You are no longer a trainee, you are no longer receiving trainee wages, and the study component attached to the traineeship arrangement ends with the contract.

What Study Outcomes You Keep

Every unit you have been assessed as competent in before the contract ends remains on your USI transcript permanently. The USI — your Unique Student Identifier — is a national record maintained by the Australian Government that tracks your VET qualifications across all providers and all states.

Your RTO is legally required to issue you a Statement of Attainment listing every completed unit. This document is a nationally recognised credential. If you completed six of the 13 BSB30120 units before leaving, you hold a Statement of Attainment for those six units.

Do I lose my qualification if I leave a traineeship?
No. Units you have been assessed as competent in are permanently recorded on your USI transcript. Your RTO must issue a Statement of Attainment for those units. Completed competencies do not disappear when a training contract ends.

Can You Restart Later?

Yes. Two pathways are available.

New traineeship with a new employer. If you find a new employer willing to take you on as a trainee, a new training contract can be registered and you continue from where you left off. Credit transfer applies for the units already completed, so you do not repeat work you have already done.

Independent enrolment. You re-enrol in BSB30120 directly with an RTO as a fee-for-service student. You pay course fees, apply for credit transfer for completed units and work through the remaining units independently. Vanguard Business Education (RTO 91219) can facilitate this pathway with SmartCoach™ support throughout.

Can I continue studying after leaving a traineeship?
Yes. You can re-enrol in BSB30120 independently through an RTO such as Vanguard Business Education (RTO 91219) and apply for credit transfer for units already completed. You pay course fees as a fee-for-service student rather than as a trainee.

What Happens to Government Funding?

NSW Smart and Skilled funding is attached to the traineeship arrangement. When the training contract ends, the subsidised funding generally ends with it. If you re-enrol independently, you are no longer in a traineeship and the Smart and Skilled subsidy no longer applies to your study in the same way.

This means completing BSB30120 independently after a traineeship ends may cost you course fees that would not have applied under the traineeship arrangement. The remaining units are still completable — they just have a different cost structure.

Before you leave: Talk to your Apprenticeship Connect provider and your RTO. A contract transfer to a new employer may be possible without losing your funding status. This option is worth exploring before ending the arrangement entirely.

Financial Considerations

Your trainee wages end when your employment ends. If you were relying on that income, you will need to plan for the gap between leaving and starting new employment.

If you were on a payment plan for any portion of course fees, check with your RTO whether payments continue after the training contract ends. Vanguard Business Education outlines this clearly before enrolment — if you are uncertain, contact us directly.

Should You Finish Before Leaving?

If the workplace situation is genuinely difficult, staying until qualification completion may not be possible or reasonable. Your physical and mental wellbeing matter more than a training contract.

If the decision is less urgent — a better job offer, a desire for change, a disagreement with your employer — it is worth calculating how close you are to finishing before making the call. Three units remaining after 10 months of a traineeship is a different situation to six units remaining after four months. The cost of finishing is low if you are nearly there.

How to Protect Your Career

Resign professionally. Written notice, in line with your employment contract, with a clear final date. The relationship with your employer and the reference they give you matters regardless of how the traineeship ended.

Request your Statement of Attainment from your RTO in writing at the time you leave. Do not wait to be chased — the document is yours and you are entitled to it.

Update your USI records at usi.gov.au to confirm your completed units are correctly recorded. This is your permanent record and worth verifying.

Can I transfer my traineeship to a new employer?
Yes, in some circumstances. A training contract can be transferred to a new employer if both parties agree and the state training authority approves the transfer. Contact your RTO or Apprenticeship Connect provider to explore this option before ending the arrangement.
Will employers know I left a traineeship early?
No. Your training contract details are not shared with future employers. A Statement of Attainment for completed units is a genuine credential you can include on your resume.
