Why this matters before you enrol
Most people comparing AIM, TAFE and private RTOs are really asking one of two questions. Will an employer take my certificate less seriously if it comes from a smaller provider? And am I paying for a name, a building or the learning?
Get the first wrong and you might pay thousands more than you need to for a brand your employer does not care about. Get the second wrong and you might pick the lowest price, then find the delivery mode does not fit a working week and the course drifts past its end date. Both mistakes are avoidable if you know what actually differs between provider types.
What is the same at AIM, TAFE and a private RTO
Every registered training organisation delivering BSB40520 trains and assesses against the same national training package, published on training.gov.au. The units, the performance standard and the AQF Level 4 qualification are the same whether you study with a public TAFE, AIM or a small online provider. The Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) regulates most of them against the same Standards for RTOs.
Your certificate shows the qualification code and title, and the provider's name and RTO number. An employer checking your credential sees BSB40520 either way.
Does a TAFE Certificate IV in Leadership and Management carry more recognition than one from a private RTO?

AIM: a known name, with an experience requirement
The Australian Institute of Management is one of the best-known names in Australian management education. AIM Education and Training (RTO 0049) delivers BSB40520 as part of the Scentia group, self-paced online through its myAIM platform, with masterclasses, coaching sessions and workshops also run online.
Who AIM suits
- You have at least two years of full-time-equivalent work experience.
- Your employer is paying, or prefers management qualifications from a provider it recognises.
- You want scheduled online sessions such as masterclasses alongside self-paced study.
What to check
AIM did not show a fee on its course page when we checked, so ask for the full cost in writing, including what the zipMoney payment option adds. If you are newly promoted or have not yet worked two years full time, confirm you meet the entry requirement before you invest time in the application. In Western Australia, AIM WA operates as a separate organisation, so check which one you are enrolling with.
TAFE: a public provider, and possibly a subsidy
TAFE is state-run, so there is no single "TAFE" price or delivery model. TAFE NSW, TAFE Queensland and the Victorian TAFEs each set their own options, and subsidies depend on the state you live in.
Who TAFE suits
- You qualify for a subsidised or fee-free place. In NSW, check Smart and Skilled.
- You want blended or campus study with some face-to-face contact.
- You or your employer prefer a public provider.
What to check
If you do not qualify for a subsidy, TAFE can cost more than most online private providers: one course directory lists a TAFE NSW full fee of $7,160, against $899 to $2,600 for the online private RTOs we checked. Confirm the fee that applies to you with TAFE directly. If you work full time, also check whether the blended timetable fits your week, or whether a fully online option runs where you live.

Private RTOs: flexible, but not one category
"Private RTO" describes ownership, not quality. On 28 September 2026 we checked seven online private providers of BSB40520. Their published upfront fees ranged from $899 to $2,600. Their support ranged from weekday email and phone help, to set marking turnarounds of five to seven working days, to live online tutorials and, in our case, SmartCoach™ 24-hour learning support alongside a trainer.
That spread is the point. Two private RTOs can differ from each other more than either differs from TAFE. So compare them one by one on four things:
- Total cost: the upfront fee, and what extensions, RPL or reassessment add.
- Support hours: whether help is there when you study, which for most working adults is evenings and weekends.
- Marking turnaround: how many working days before you get assessments back.
- Assessment design: generic question sets, or workplace tasks that make you plan, decide and write like a team leader.
